1935-S Peace Dollar

The 1935-S Peace Dollar (Buy on eBay) represents one of the better produced issues of the series from the San Francisco Mint. Unlike some of the conditionally challenging issues from the mint, the majority of coins are well struck and do not suffer from the heavy bag marks and abrasions which will preclude higher grades.

An intriguing aspect to this issue is a slight design change made to the reverse of the coin part way through production. A fourth ray was added below the word “ONE” and a seventh ray was added beneath the eagle’s tail feathers. No explanation has been offered for the slight change and the examples with the extra ray do not command any premium.

The total mintage for the issue was 1,964,000 pieces with relatively few of these reaching circulation, preserving some gem examples for future generations. Across the two major grading services, more than 1,000 pieces have been graded MS65, about 200 pieces have been graded MS66, and five pieces have been graded MS67. One of the NGC MS67 graded examples realized $19,550 at an auction held in April 2009.
