The 1927-S Peace Dollar (Buy on eBay) represents one of several San Francisco Mint issues of the series which is more or less available in circulated and lower mint state grades, but which becomes extremely difficult to find at the gem level. These conditional rarities often present the major challenge for collectors seeking to assemble a complete collection of the series in gem or higher.
From an original mintage of 866,000 pieces, the major grading services have certified only about 150 pieces at MS65 and just three pieces finer at MS66. The MS65 graded examples can sell for prices around the $10,000 level. One of the examples graded PCGS MS66 sold for the astounding price of $48,875 at auction in 2011.
Most collectors will need to be satisfied with a near gem MS64 graded example of the issue. The grading services have certified about 2,500 examples as such and these can be acquired for prices ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 depending on quality. Care should be taken to wait for an example with a sharp strike and minimum of bag marks and abrasions.
